At Fort Royal School, our curriculum is rooted in the ethos Play. Learn. Laugh. Succeed. and is designed to meet the highly individual needs of every pupil. We do not adopt a single standardised set of pathways; instead, each child follows a personalised curriculum pathway that is carefully mapped from their EHCP outcomes, individual assessments, individual starting points, and priorities for development. These pathways are as rigorous and structured as the nationally recognised pre-formal, semi-formal, and formal models, but are uniquely flexible to reflect the complex learning profiles of our pupils.
Our curriculum intent is clear: to provide every learner with opportunities for enjoyment, engagement, and meaningful progress in communication, cognition, social and emotional development, independence, and life skills. Through the Layers of Learning framework, the Engagement Model, and personalised SMART targets, we ensure that progress is ambitious, functional, and relevant. Learning is multisensory, play-based, and experiential, underpinned by adaptive teaching and therapeutic approaches that enable pupils to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
Parents, carers, and professionals are central partners in this journey. By embedding EHCP priorities across the curriculum and capturing progress through pupil voice, work samples, and observation, we ensure that achievement is visible, celebrated, and purposeful. Our goal is for every child to leave Fort Royal more confident, independent, and prepared for the next stage of their education and life.
