All children deserve the care and support they need to have the best start in life. A secure, safe and happy childhood is important in its own right. Good parenting and high quality early learning provide the foundation children need to fulfil their full potential. (Early years foundation stage statutory framework for group and school based providers July 2025)

In Early Years at Fort Royal Primary School, we aim to provide a broad, balanced, differentiated and specialised curriculum which addresses the children's individual needs. We recognise that children learn and develop in different ways and have their own learning styles. We value all areas of learning and development and understand that they are often interconnected.

The prime areas of learning and development are particularly crucial for our children, due to the early levels of development that they are working at. They are:

    • Personal, social and emotional development (PSED)
    • Communication and language (C&L)
    • Physical development (PD)

Adults will support the children in their four aspect areas, through which the prime areas are strengthened and applied. The specific areas of learning and development are:

    • Literacy (L)
    • Mathematics (M)
    • Understanding the world (UW)
    • Expressive arts and design (EAD)

At Fort Royal Primary School, we know that our children are working at the very early stages of development and, therefore, we mainly focus on the prime areas; however enable the children to learn through exploration within the specific areas.
