I am writing to share some personal news with you. After much reflection, I have decided to retire as Headteacher of Fort Royal Primary School at the end of this academic year. My final day of service will be 31st August 2026. It has been both a privilege and an inspiration to work in partnership with you through the many difficult, as well as joyous, times that we have shared together. The strength of our school community, and the way staff, families and governors work together in the best interests of our children, is something I will always treasure. I am immensely proud of what we have achieved as a school and of the exceptional care, learning and opportunities we have created for our pupils. I also wish to continue championing disabled children, who have been my life’s work, but in a less intensive way so that I may have the time and space to pursue other passions too. The Governing Body, with support from the Local Authority, will begin the process of recruiting my successor later this term. This will ensure a smooth transition and provide stability for our pupils and families. In the meantime, it is very much business as usual as we continue to work towards our school priorities. Thank you for your trust, support and encouragement throughout my time as Headteacher. It has been the greatest privilege of my career to serve this school community, and I look forward to continuing to work with you all over the year ahead. With warm regards, Ed Francis Headteacher.
Following Mr Francis’ personal news about his retirement, I would like to let you know that the Governors are very pleased he has made this decision, so that he can pursue other interests and enjoy more time with his family. However, this will, of course, leave a huge gap for us to fill in the coming months. We will be forever indebted to Mr Francis for his unwavering support and his championing of both our school and the wider SEND community. It is wonderful that Mr Francis will be with us for the remainder of this academic year, and we can all make sure that he receives the send-off into retirement that he so richly deserves. Together with the Local Authority, the Governors will be commencing the recruitment process later this term, and I will ensure that we keep you updated on progress as and when we have more news. With best wishes, Emma Emma Evans Chair of Governors, Fort Royal School

Class 3 have settled well into their new class routines – well done! 🙂 In literacy, we have focused on listening and responding to our key text Someone Bigger through props, symbols, the sensory story and the massage story. In maths, we have been working on our counting skills through various number rhymes and songs, using technology and props. In topic, we have been learning about our bodies through action songs and rhymes. We have also been looking at ourselves in mirrors within the sensory garden.
Class 13 In our class, we’ve been exploring the story This Is Our House by Michael Rosen, which has helped us think about friendship, sharing, and what makes a home. Inspired by the book, we’ve been busy constructing our own houses using boxes and other construction materials, working together to build creative and imaginative structures. We’ve also been learning about designers such as Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Laura Ashley, studying their work to understand how they approach design and construction. We’ve even had the chance to put some of their ideas into practice in our own projects! In Maths, we’ve been focusing on place value, developing our understanding of numbers and how they are made up of tens and ones. As part of our Topic work, we’ve been learning about different household sounds—listening carefully and identifying the noises we might hear around the home. It’s been a fun and busy time in class, full of learning through stories, design, play, and discovery!
